Frequently askeD questions

What is Schutzhund? What is IGP?

Schutzhund (German for "protection dog"), now known as IGP, is a dog sport testing tracking, obedience, and protection skills, evaluating a dog's suitability as a working dog. Originating in Germany in the early 1900s for German Shepherds, it later became a standard for all five German protection breeds, including Boxers, Dobermanns, Giant Schnauzers, and Rottweilers. Although open to all breeds, it is mainly dominated by German Shepherds and Belgian Shepherds today. Schutzhund clubs provide group training, host trials for titles, and the best dogs can compete at national and international championships.

How do I get involved?

Reach out to an IGP club in your area to learn more about their training and membership.

Where can I see in person what IGP dog sport is?

Check out the our event calendar for upcoming USCA sanctioned events.

Events

Can I join a USCA IGP club with a breed other than a German Shepherd Dog?

Yes. Most clubs will welcome other working breeds like Rottweiler, Malinois, Dobermann, Rottweiler, Giant Schnauzer, Boxer, Dutch Shepherd, etc.  However, not all dogs are suitable for the sport and are generally tested before acceptance.

I would like to become a Protection Helper...

Great news!  Our Region is always looking for enthusiastic and athletic dog trainers (on any levels) that express strong desire and commitment to become a Protection Helper.  Reach out to the nearest club to learn if they are recruiting.  You can also send us an email and we will direct you to the right teaching helper or a club that is looking to train someone new.

I don't currently have a dog but I would still love to be involved with the IGP sport...

There is room for everyone! Become a valued member of the SW Region by volunteering at our events! You can learn a ton about the sport and its dynamics before getting your next dog.
